Abstract

Optimization of sludge conditioning during dehydration is a constant challenge for wastewater treatment plants. This study focused on the characterization of water treatment residues and the use of an electrokinetic analyzer loads for optimum polymer dose for sludge dewatering. The study established a relationship between the optimum dose of the polymer and the cationic demand in the filtrate using the Streaming current measures. The experiments were performed with a cationic polymer. The optimum polymer dose was determined based on the capillary suction time (CST) and the turbidity by pressure filtration tests. A relationship was established between the Streaming Current filtrate and the optimum polymer dose. The latter corresponds to the isoelectric point of the current with a good quality of the filtrate in terms of MES. The results indicate that the real-time optimization of the polymer dose may eventually be performed at treatment plants sewage with an analyzer of electrokinetic charges primarily as sludge dewatering is done so discontinuous allowing periodic cleaning of the probe to prevent its clogging and give erroneous results.
