In an educational framework, industrial processes are rarely accessible to perform experimental tests. The use of software to simulate these dynamic models is often a solution to enable the study of these processes. This research aims to develop mathematical models of the main operating units used in the field of process engineering (turbines, distillation column and reactors) to include a new library to Automation Studio.
The steam turbine was selected for modeling. A linear model of the turbine was developed to provide a quick overview of the latter. This model was first simulated using Automation Studio software and validated using Matlab-Simulink software.
Another model of the turbine that is used by designers of the steam turbine was developed; it is a nonlinear model. The model was also implemented in Matlab-Simulink. To simulate the closed loop model (simulation of a power plant based on a steam turbine incorporating the developed model of steam turbine), the speed controller and the control valves have also been modeled. The simulation results obtained are conclusive and reflect the observed behavior for this type of turbine in the literature.
Another typical process model that integrates the main unit operation used in process engineering has been implemented in Automation Studio and validated using Matlab-Simulink software. The model is composed of a reactor, a heat exchanger, a separator, a distillation column and a recycle system.
