The arrival of Building Information Modeling (BIM) answered several needs of the Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector, in particular the improvement of building design, which have a significant incidence on their life cycle. However, it requires changes in the design and management of information.
For this research, the choice was made to focus on one stage of the building design, namely the design of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems (HVAC) and especially the heating and cooling load calculation.
The main objective is to examine the use of BIM for the load calculations. The scientific approach used is exploratory. It uses professional observations and includes a mapping of the design process in order to identify the exchange of information between the project stakeholders. A case study of the partner firm's projects is then conducted to explore options that could improve its current practices.
The results show an interest in BIM for the professionals but it is not exploited to its full potential. Based on the analysis of the results and the reconciliation with the literature review, recommendations are made to promote the development of the BIM within the firm, to rethink the design process, to implement an information management strategy and to enhance the use of the calculation of heating and cooling loads.
