Anodizing of aluminum parts is commonly practiced in industry, in particular to improve the surface properties of machined parts and add aesthetic coloration. Machining defects that are difficult to perceive can be accentuated by anodizing and force the scrapping of these parts. While laboratory techniques can detect these defects, most machining companies do not have such resources. The aim of this research is to explore the effect of the surface finish of machined aluminum parts on the quality of anodizing using common industrial equipment, with the goal of being able to detect and correct these defects upstream.
Samples of 6061-T6511 aluminum will be machined with various tools and cutting parameters to produce a wide range of surface finishes in order to generalize a potential correlation. The surface finish will be analyzed by a linear roughness meter and the quality of the anodization by a reflectometer. After validation of the measurements and measuring instruments, it will be noted that anodizing decreases the reflectivity of a machined surface according to the angle of incidence of the reflected beam. An algorithm will be developed to analyze the dataset, but no valid general relationship between roughness and reflectivity can be established.
