The need of gear optimization requires a better understanding of its vibratory behaviour. The theoretical dynamic analysis can be conducted by linear or non linear models. However, the presence of defects on a tooth changes this dynamic behaviour. The objective of this research is to develop a numerical model to simulate the effect of defects on gear vibration. The effects of tooth cracks and surface defects are analysed. Different sizes of defects are considered and vibration responses are computed for each case. Experimental tests are conducted in order to measure the vibrations of damaged gears and validate the numerical model.
