Cognitive radio allows opportunistic use of radio Spectrum band. The idea of a more efficient and opportunistic band usage is attractive for military and emergency services given the growing congestion in all frequency bands even those that are reserved for them.
In this thesis, we adapt, according to the realities and requirements of tactical radios, the key concepts presented in the literature carried on spectrum sensing and on the commercial cognitive radio. An presentation and estimation of the requirements of the most popular Spectrum sensing and signal detection algorithms are done. We present a strategy for a simple and fast frequency band selection with spectrum sensing for tactical radio. The strategy is based on two premises : the first, the frequency band with the lowest energy is the best choice ; and the second the receiver is best placed to sense the spectrum and to determine the frequency band to use.
The simulations of the system developed gives interesting results (up to 65% of gains) when the radio’s electromagnetic environment varies slowly relatively to the duration of the frequency hops. The simulations were also used to determine the key parameters and their optimal values for the frequency band selection with spectrum sensing proposed strategy based on listening caractérisitiques channel.
