In order to execute a proper water residuals treatment, the use of moving-bed biofilm reactors (MBBR) has become one of the most used systems these days. Although this type of systems are classified between the most popular to reduce the BOD5 (Biochemical oxygen demand) and NH4 + (ion ammonium), the nitrification processes is affected when the water temperature is below 5°C. The results obtained show that the growth rate of the biofilm (μ) varies according to the incubation period independently of each analyzed season. In general, it was found that the kinetics of growth of the biofilm is higher during the first interval of incubation (0-7 days). Meanwhile, the growth rate stars to decrease when the incubation period increases An Incubation study done within the reactor shows that the concentration of biofilm attached to the K1 type carrier (mg by carrier) varies according to the temperature of water and organic load (DBO5). It was found that this K1 type carrier can keep big concentrations of the biofilm (16 mg-VSS/M), however this high concentration does not seem to influence in a direct way the rates of reduction of DBO5 and NH4 + during the winter period evaluated. The result of the analyses for the summer period shows that a low concentration of biofilm (0,8 mg-VSS/M in average) leads to high reductions rates of DBO5 and NH4 +.
