This research was conducted to verify the common first order approximation present in the literature regarding synchronous generator excitation systems. First, theories regarding thyristorbased rectifiers and Park transform needed to create an average model in Park’s reference frame are provided. Then, a synchronization system is designed to be incorporated in the switching model that will be used to validate the average model by simulations. Next, the average model in qd-frame is built, then validated with an experimental setup. Finally, the dynamics on the variables of the system are analyzed by sending firing angle step commands to the average model. It was discovered that the first order approximation is a lot more complex than expected, and may not be valid in every situations.
