The chemical pollution of surface waters creates a real threat for the aquatic environment. Pharmaceutical products are detected among chemical pollutants in various matrices. These compounds are not the exception among other molecules suspected of being dangerous for the environment. These products attract more and more the intention and are the object of a growing world environmental concern, seen that even if they are detected in low(weak) concentrations in the order of some ng/L, they may show, according to several ecotoxicological studies, carcinogenic, mutagenic or endocrine disruptors. The incapacity of current wastewater treatment to remove this kind of pollutants leads to the need to search for methods capable of degrading them. One of these methods is the ozonation.
It is in this perspective that the present manuscript aims at studying the ozonation’s effect on one of the pharmaceutical compounds: the acetaminophen. This analgesic is the most used in the world. The treatment by the ozone of water contaminated by this analgesic is followed by the reduction in concentration of acetaminophen in the solution, as well as reductions of COD and TOC. So, an evaluation of the solution’s toxicity during the treatment is studied, it is based on the study of the mortality’s percentage of D.magna.
The study’s results suggest that for an acetaminophen solution with an initial concentration of 100 mg / L at pH=9, a mass of 43.68 mg of O3 was enough to have a 95% reduction of the concentration. However the toxicity’s test showed that it is insufficient to eliminate all the solution’s toxicity. To achieve 0% mortality of D.magna, an amount of 1.15 mol O3/mol acetaminophen has been determined.
