In order to deploy wireless networks in high-voltage substations, the electromagnetic environment should be characterized. The wireless medium of these environments is subject to various types of distortions. A significant part of these distortions appear in the form of impulsive noise. This particular noise is not Gaussian. Conventional receivers are designed to operate in typical environments where the noise is assumed to be a white Gaussian noise. Using conventional receivers in substation environments results in poor performances. To design a reliable communication system, more suitable receivers for this particular environments have to be considered.
In this work, we study and develop methods to mitigate impulsive noise at the receiver side. This study considers wireless communication systems in high voltage substations. We consider single antenna systems as well as multi-antenna systems at the receiver side. The performance of different existing impulsive noise mitigation techniques, as well as new methods developed by us, are evaluated. The performance evaluation is done in terms of bit error rate through numerical simulations.
