During deformation at temperatures close to the transus in the two-phase domain, dynamic transformation takes place and a fraction of the alpha phase is transformed into beta phase. In this study the possible occurrence of dynamic transformation in the near alpha aerospace grade titanium alloy IMI834 was studied and its influence on microstructural changes was quantified.
In this study, the effects of temperature, deformation, deformation rate and beta grain size were observed through uniaxial compression test on the entire central slice of the material. The microstructural analyses carried out by optical microscopy made it possible to highlight the modification of the alpha phase fraction. The parameters have different impacts, always with an increase in the alpha phase in the center and a decrease at the edges. A prediction model for this alloy is proposed.
It is concluded that the dynamic transformation has a heterogeneous influence on the microstructure within a compressed material, creating differences in mechanical properties within the forged part.
