Résumé

This study evaluates the reproducibility and sensitivity of the impact resonance test (IRT) as a non-destructive testing (NDT) for characterizing the viscoelastic behavior of asphalt mixtures (AM). The IRT allows determining the complex modulus (|E*|) and phase angle (φ) from the resonance response of specimens. Tests were carried out on 100% reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) mixtures compacted at different temperatures (110, 130, 150, and 170 ℃) and tested at various temperatures (−30 ℃ to 40 ℃) in laboratories to assess the method’s reproducibility. Differences between laboratories remained below ±2.5% for |E*| and ±1.0° for φ, confirming the reproducibility. The results also showed that increasing the compaction temperature raises |E*| and reduces φ due to additional binder aging, while a higher air void content decreases |E*|, as expected for the aging effect. These findings demonstrate that the IRT is a reliable and reproducible NDT for assessing the effects of compaction parameters on AM, contributing to the ongoing discussions within the RILEM TC MWP Committee.
