Abstract

The aeronautic industry faces obsolescence management problems due to rapid technological evolution. The aeronautic systems have much longer lifecycles than the components they are made of. Because of the mismatch between the lifecycles and the restrictive norms applied in the aeronautic industry and in order to avoid extra costs of maintenance and delay, manufacturers need efficient obsolescence management processes. Moreover, due to the low production volume they represent, the aeronautic manufacturers only have a little control over their supply chain. Many studies on obsolescence in the aeronautics already exist. Authors recommend to implement management and forecasting processes and to establish collaboration relationships with their suppliers, as they have more visibility on the supply chain. This research first introduces a list of criteria for a good management of obsolescence, and the creation of a method to generate transition and implementation plans for enhancing obsolescence management and forecasting, for a concrete example. The aeronautic manufacturer for which the method is created doesn’t have any proactive obsolescence management or forecasting tools. The method is created based on the design science methodology, with the participation of the employees involved in the obsolescence management. The method has twelve (12) steps leading to the development of a transition and implementation plan. To apply the method, several individual and group interviews were conducted. Criteria for efficient obsolescence management and forecasting were also listed based on the interviews. This list was then compared to the criteria found in the literature. In line with the needs of the employees and with the advices from an industrial expert in obsolescence management, the transition and implementation plan is divided in three (3) main phases: 1) enhancing obsolescence management, 2) enhancing obsolescence forecasting and 3) managing the suppliers. Even if the transition and implementation plan has not been applied in the company, the method and the plan were approved by the employees and the users.
