The new trend of animal welfare for farms raised several questions about the egg production system to be installed for laying hens to respect at the same time their well-being and the environment. This thesis presents a study of the environmental part of nitrogen balance of each cage system (conventional cage, enriched cage, aviary house) to compare them.
A review of literature presents the previous researches as well as the results obtained in the same project (well-being component) to compare the results obtained. Some laboratory tests were conducted to collect the necessary data to establish a complete nitrogen balance for the different types of systems.
After collecting the necessary results, the nitrogen balances corresponding to each cage arrangement are established. Nitrogen emissions were found to be significantly higher in aviaries with a rate of 649.77 mg / hen / day compared to 36.38 mg / hen / day only in enriched cages and 51.57 mg / hen / day in conventional cages. This study shows the reliability of managed cages with the lowest ammonia emissions. This result is endorsed by the animal welfare’s results
However, it is necessary to equip the cages with a very efficient system and advanced drainage of manure to avoid the emissions that can be produced by the dung because the rate of nitrogen is very important in the managed cages.
