Abstract

Since their first use in France in the 1980s, high modulus asphalt (also called EME in french) technology has demonstrated their effectiveness by increasing the service life of pavement structures. They spread quickly all over the world for 30 years. In order to get similar performances but in a more unfavorable environment, high modulus asphalt mixes adapted to cold climates have been recently developed. It is characterized by a low high-performance binder content and a high content of fines materials. Since this type of mix design has never been produced on an industrial scale, conducting a sensitivity study on the component dosage is essential to determine whether the quality criteria currently used can be applied to these new products. From a two-level complete factorial experimental design varying the bitumen content (± 0.25%) and fine materials (± 1.2%), different properties of the mix are studied. The variations in the dosages do not allow to observe significant differences in rutting behavior, cold temperature resistance and stiffness of the material. For these three parameters, the only differences observed with the original formula are attributable to variations in voids. Tension-compression fatigue tests have shown, after ANCOVA, a variation in the fatigue behavior mainly induced binder dosage. The comparison of fatigue performance with a model based on 4-point and 2-point bending fatigue tests does not allow us to conclude that the formula is more sensitive than standard asphalt formulations.
