Abstract

Although the exponential evolution of information technology, the construction industry has been able to afford a multiple of technological solutions despite its complex nature. Meeting the challenge of improving labor productivity on site requires not only highly managerial performance but also high performance of materials and equipment to carry out the work. Several startups specialized in the innovation of information technologies and automation have immersed in the construction industry to innovate Technology Aided Construction Tools (TACT). But these startups find it difficult to assess the added value of their prototype before or during development because of lack of real testing ground. This research work proposes a method dedicated to startups and companies that develop TACT to allow their prototype to be evaluated. And this, through a characterization of the traditional way from qualitative data from tradespeople. As well as by understanding the innovative way. This proposed method was designed following the guidelines of research in Design Science; it comprises four stages which make it possible to assess the added value of an innovative technological tool before or during its development. The method has two inter-step activities for validating partial results. A case study was carried out for the ex post evaluation of the proposed method. The proposed method can provide support for the developers of technological tools dedicated to construction. It will allow them to improve features and adapt products to the conditions of the intended usage situation. As a result of our case study, the potential for the use of technological tools on site is practically promoting, which further confirms the capacity of IT to increase productivity and optimize errors in the construction industry and that by demonstrating more efficiency in coordination.
