Abstract

The manufacturing industry is constantly evolving to achieve increasingly demanding standards of precision, quality, and adaptability. Metrology-assisted assembly (MAA) represents a promising solution that uses precise 3D measurements to guide assembly processes, but current systems present significant limitations. Previous work has revealed substantial challenges: functional limitations of existing applications such as PolyWorks™ AR, lack of direct integration between metrology systems and specialized software, measurement volume constraints, and complex preparation processes. This thesis presents the development of an innovative assisted assembly system combining 3D metrology through iGPS (indoor Global Positioning System) and augmented reality via Microsoft HoloLens 2. The global objective is to create an integrated solution comprising an application for MS HoloLens 2 and a plugin for PolyWorks™ Inspector, enabling precise detection of user position, exact superposition of virtual CAD models with physical objects, and precise automatic alignment. The main innovations include the development of a plugin for PolyWorks™ Inspector enabling direct integration with iGPS, establishment of a complex matrix transformation chain between different coordinate systems, implementation of a client-server architecture optimizing MS HoloLens 2 resources for alignment. This work contributes to making 3D metrology-assisted assembly systems more accessible and efficient for complex industrial environments, by overcoming the functional constraints of existing solutions and establishing a more intuitive method for assisting operators in performing complex inspection and assembly tasks.
