Product development is a crucial activity in modern organizations. It can be framed according to three orthogonal domains: the product, the activities involved in it, and the persons responsible for carrying out these activities. As competition stiffens, organizations are now not only forced to continuously introduce new products, but also to shorten their development time, reduce costs, and improve the variety and the quality of their products. They answered successfully to this challenge by adopting lean engineering practices and by focusing on value creation and tracking waste of resources. Quality programs and continuous improvement tools also help increasing the efficiency of product development. However, risk management is too often set apart from planning tools. Every step of product development process, and more precisely every task, inevitably has risks. By risk is meant the triggering of an event causing a change in the initial scenario of the task. This path change, even if planned during a previous earlier product development steps, will have an impact on the overall process performance (time, cost, quality). Through a survey of aerospace industry stakeholders, this study provides an understanding of the level of satisfaction and user needs regarding risk management process in product development. Following this, it proposes a new process to collect and exploit risk management data in product development.
