Efficiency is an absolute quest for every enterprise. This is also true for Quebec manufacturing companies. That’s why many of them decided to go Lean to optimize organizational processes, reduce waste and thus enhance their efficiency.
Many studies have been done on Lean implementation to production department, but few are measuring the impact of Lean on occupational health and safety of maintenance department. Indeed, during these organizational changes, the emphasis is mostly put on production at the expense of maintenance. However, maintenance departments are affected by Lean implementation as they are an integral part of the enterprise’s activities. There is existing literature about Lean adaptation to a maintenance department but none, as far as we know, about creating a Lean maintenance department from the start.
The aim of this study is to develop a design and implementation model of a Lean-type maintenance department focused on occupational health and safety for a Quebec small and medium enterprise. The methodology used in this study could then be improved to realise other similar studies and eventually be validated.
This methodology consists in obtaining data from four different sources in order to provide internal validity. These sources of data are: scientific literature, semi-directed interviews, observation of maintenance tasks and the industrial partner’s documentations.
A field study provided this data. Overall, 14 participants were interviewed and eight maintenance tasks were observed.
The result of this study is the proposal of a design and implementation model of a Lean-type maintenance department focused on occupational health and safety. This approach is hybrid between traditional approach and the Lean adaptation of an existing maintenance department. It is enhanced by the case study results.
