Background: The rapidly changing competitive environment and the lack of resources required for maintenance activities are forcing companies to adapt their asset management strategies to real needs. Establishing an effective and efficient maintenance program is one way to achieve this desired competitiveness. However, implementing such a maintenance program is often not straightforward due to the lack of a structured approach to decision support. Capability Maturity models have such a structured approach and are very useful for measuring different aspects of an organization’s practices.
Objectives: The document proposes a maintenance management tool to support companies in their activities and improve their maturity.
Methodology: The three-step methodology adopted in this approach assumes that companies could achieve high levels of maturity by concentrating their resources on critical materials. Its adoption offers a clear vision of the internal and external issues in companies, as well as an understanding of critical materials in order to carry out actions whose profit is guaranteed. The approach also makes it possible to analyze the level of maturity reached by the companies and provides a structure of progressive actions.
Results: From this work, an intervention kit consisting of three main modules developed in agile mode on the Excel software of the Microsoft suite. The tool was deployed for application in the Imaging and Orthopaedics research Laboratory (LIO) at the École de technologie supérieure of Montréal. The pre and post intervention analysis demonstrates a better understanding of the importance of assets and a structured view of the evolutionary actions.
Originality: The document presents a method of aligning the actual needs of an organization for the satisfaction of its customer segments to its portfolio of assets. It is possible to observe the different connections from the organization’s customers to its equipment park. The document should be useful to both researchers and maintenance professionals interested in using new maintenance management methods that incorporate certain requirements of the ISO 55000 asset management standard.
