Abstract

Currently in Quebec, the majority of the glass we recycle is subsequently found in landfills. In fact, this situation is mainly caused by the presence of mixed glass that can not be exploited to make new products. Mixed glass is essentially created when the different bottles and containers break during transportation to the sorting centers. Since the selling price at the processing center is too high, the sorting centers send it directly to landfills, which are often the most economical alternative. To counter this problem, a large-scale project in collaboration with the Société des Alcools du Québec (SAQ) aimed at recovering glass was set up at the Laboratoire des Chaussées et Matériaux Bitumineux (LCMB) of the École de technologie supérieure (ETS). This master thesis aims to evaluate the feasibility of incorporating glass particles in bituminous mix to obtain similar or better properties to conventional asphalt mixes. To do this, two types of asphalt mix have been studied, namely, an ESG10 which is a mix used in the wearing course and a GB20 which is used as a base layer. For ESG10 and GB20, conventional asphalt and asphalt containing 10% recycled glass, some of which suffered a reduction in bitumen content, were manufactured. For all mixes, the performance was evaluated according to three criteria: 1) the compactibility with the gyratory shear compactor, 2) the rutting resistance, and 3) the complex module. Experimental results have shown, among other things, that the compaction ability is similar between conventional asphalt and glass mix with the same amount of bitumen. Similar or better rutting performance of glass mixes is also observed compared to the reference asphalt when they have undergone bitumen reduction. In addition, it is found that the addition of glass particles has no significant effects on the stiffness of the asphalt. Overall, the feasibility of incorporating glass particles in ESG10 and GB20 type asphalt has been proven.
