This research follows previous studies in engineering change efficiency, and more precisely on CAD model modification. Specifically, we study the impact of features renamed into the modification of a part. This aspect has often been introduced in CAD education as a means to bring explicit information to a design intent, but there has been no experimental investigation to assess this point. Our experiments with two groups of students, one working with a renamed model and the other with a model that is not renamed, reveal some specific differences. Working with features renamed into the specification tree influences the understanding of and the operation times of a change. The group with a renamed model obtained better performances, specifically in the understanding of the design intent, an essential aspect of change efficiency. However, in the current state of our study, this performance result is not yet significant. On the other hand, the research highlights some practices which allow an improved understanding of the design intent and that convey good results in performing change tasks.
