Abstract

The benefits brought by using building information modeling (BIM) during the design and construction phases need no longer to be proven. It is however during the operation phase that building owners have the most to gain out of using BIM. Despite this, little research has been done concerning the handover of BIM projects towards asset managers. The objective of this research is to analyse the process of managing information of a digital asset in preparation for handover and to observe how the international standard of information management is applied to a project in the context of Quebec. It is supported by a literature review that talks about the benefits of BIM applied post construction, the particularities of the Quebec construction industry, issues related to the implementation of BIM post construction, concepts that address issues related to the implementation of BIM post construction and actions that contribute to information management efforts. The methodological approach of this research, based on a constructivist epistemology, relies on qualitative data collected upon stakeholders implicated in a pilot project used as a case study as well as on quantitative data taken from documents exchanged throughout the project. Research demonstrated that the application of ISO 19650 faces many obstacles due to the changes it brings to relations between stakeholders and to the concepts production and management of deliverables.
