The energy transition is upon us, and the vehicle equipment community is currently being asked to help reduce the environmental footprint. Currently, the development by manufacturers of light and heavy vehicles using alternative energies is progressing. This technological development leads to the revision of the operational modes of organizations. In this context, customers of its equipment must deal with new technology, often between electricity or hydrogen to power the batteries. Assessing the infrastructure required for charging stations is also a challenge. As we can observe, the task promises to be enormous and complex.
To help with this transition, the marketing of light and heavy vehicles can rely on the “Equipment as a Service” business model. This model is currently used in the manufacturing equipment sector but little for vehicular equipment. In Europe, vehicle manufacturers using electricity or hydrogen to power batteries are offering the «Truck as a Service (TaaS)» business model to heavy truck customers.
This dissertation aims to initiate a discussion on the model in Quebec by demonstrating its usefulness with real data from a client. To achieve this objective, a start-up that has developed an “Electric Vehicle as a Service (EVaaS)” approach has agreed to collaborate on economic analyses. We will compare the results of the model within a real situation of use of a heavy truck with electric batteries.
The fundamental objective of the dissertation being to popularize the EaaS business model, the contribution of people from the vehicle and truck industry was a major asset in the writing of the dissertation. This contribution resulted in the provision of knowledge and expertise which made it possible to develop a real case analysis. The results of this analysis are promising and could be improved with the various projects currently underway in various organizations both in North America and in Europe.
