Abstract

This thesis focuses on improving the control algorithm of the Electronic Variable Transmission (EVT), a patented technology developed by former members of the Baja team from ÉTS. While the mechanical and electronic components of the system have undergone numerous improvements since their inception, the control system has not evolved similarly. The aim of this project is therefore to improve the EVT control algorithm by rectifying existing shortcomings and optimizing overall performance. The improvements made to the algorithm are based on classic control techniques, not only to facilitate understanding and maintenance by undergraduate students but also to provide a solid foundation for future enhancements and the addition of new features. By integrating trajectory tracking with a proportional-integral compensator and Gain Scheduling, the algorithm has been able to effectively maintain the engine’s target speed, especially on asphalt. On terrains more representative of competition conditions, the error margin was reduced to +/- 140 rpm. Moreover, the implementation of a new controller for the backshift of the drive pulley significantly improved vehicle maneuverability, enhancing responsiveness and recovery. This development contributed to the success of the 2023 team, notably by winning first place in the three acceleration events. The EVT’s launch control, generating additional inertia at the start and maintaining the engine speed on target from the start, was a key factor in these victories.
