In the context of the extension of the Jewish General Hospital, some department will be moved in a new critical care ward. The operating room, the central sterilisation, the purchasing department and nursing unit will be moved.
In a cost saving goals, the hospital manager decides to revise how to supply the operating room. A method call “case cart” is used in 80% of North American hospital and the Jewish General Hospital wants to implement it. The aim of case cart is to deliver a cart with all the supply inside, for the right elective intervention, the right patient and at the good time. This master’s thesis is an application of the case cart system using industrial engineering approach. It will schedule and quantify the different needs for the case cart application in the hospital.
In a first time, a study of sterilisation process and operating room process using Value Stream Mapping is useful. It’s give help to define the future challenge. Observation and measure allow the development of a general picture of departments. In a second time, data collection allows to simulate the case cart system in the future. This simulation dimensioned the using of cart, human resources, case cart assembly, laying out and allow to find a best way to organize the case cart system in the hospital.
